Few cities in Europe can boast such a pace of development. Usually cities develop slowly, from small settlements, through organized villages and a city created in the Middle Ages with a market square, defensive walls, sometimes a castle next to it. You won't find anything like that in Katowice. This city transformed from
Intensive development of industry in this area, which required a rapid inflow of investments and many employees, but also
A unique feature of Katowice worth appreciating is its extraordinary diversity. Within a short distance from the city centre, we can experience both the big city with skyscrapers and the bustling city centre promenades, as well as forests, lakes and even semi-rural spaces.
Katowice, as a city with an industrial background, is mainly associated with built-up areas, but is also exceptionally green. As much as 42% of Katowice consists of forests, including a true nature reserve located 7 km from the Market Square! All of Katowice's green areas make up almost 2/3 of the city, and apart from forests and parks, you can also find two small lake districts here - if you consider the Three Ponds Valley and the Five Ponds Valley as such.
Katowice is also distinguished by the fact that, unlike most large cities in the world, it does not border on rural areas. On each side, Katowice borders other large cities such as Chorzów, Ruda Śląska, Mikołów, Tychy, Lędziny, Mysłowice, Sosnowiec, Czeladź and Siemianowice Śląskie. As a result, Katowice no longer has anywhere to physically expand.
Another unique feature of Katowice is related to the above fact - although the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship is not a large city, as it is inhabited by less than 280 thousand people, together with its direct neighbors it has almost 1.26 million inhabitants, and the entire metropolis, of which Katowice is the seat, has 2.25 million inhabitants.
For the English and other English-speaking people, Katowice is most often a little-known city. When they think of tourist trips in Europe, there are many much more obvious destinations for them, such as Paris, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, and even Prague, Vienna or Krakow, which are closer to Katowice. Katowice is only just building its brand on the tourist map of Europe, although Silesia, as a whole, is incredibly interesting and worth visiting - you can find numerous castles, palaces, health resorts, mountains and beautiful cities with full infrastructure here. Katowice, as the heart of a 2.4 million metropolis, has much more to offer than you would expect from this post-industrial city.
More and more residents of the United States, as well as England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, have family ties or friendships with Silesians, thanks to which they know Katowice or have already visited it. This is due, among other things, to from the large emigration from Poland to English-speaking countries, which took place at the beginning of the 21st century, the consequence of which is visiting relatives or friends in Silesia. During such trips, Katowice, thanks to
